Cyclocross Race from 1950

Oh man, I’m on a roll posting some random crap..

This video is old school. All the racers are wearing sweet wool jerseys… not a stitch of spandex to be seen. Cyclocross is supposed to have obstacles, but at one point these racers are wading chest deep in a river holding their bikes over their heads. The narrator cracks me up. I thought his accent sounded a bit like my Dad’s accent, and it turns out the race took place just an hours drive over the border from his hometown in Scotland in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

me and julie went to our first cross race a few weeks ago just outside of albany. apparently there’s quite a cyclocross scene in upstate ny, and this was the last race of the season. it was pretty awesome, but the course was nothing like the one in the 1950 video. the modern competitors are much faster cyclists, and seem to be in much better physical condition, but that old school course was the balls!

Ooh! That’s exciting. Yeah, cyclists are more fit nowadays it seems. I don’t think “weekend warrior” was a concept back then. Haha. I didn’t get my act together to race any cross this year. Next year, hopefully with a new Surly Crosscheck.

Thanks to Jeremy who brought your 1950’s video to my attention. Compared to todays cyclocross racing this looked more challenging and less predicatable.
